Title
Ash Surface
Year
2009
Materials
Ash, flat support, underlighting
Instruction
Spread ash in a thin layer across a flat horizontal surface.
Illuminate the surface faintly from below so that the texture of the ash becomes barely visible in darkness.
The work exists while the ash remains undisturbed and the light stays subdued.
It ends when the surface is broken, scattered, or loses its suspended appearance.
Note
A residue of combustion is presented as a quiet surface rather than an aftermath.
The work exists as a temporary relation between trace matter and low illumination.
